ROBERT FERGUSON
I'm a dual-degree MARCLA student studying architecture and landscape architecture at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. I currently hold a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship, and a MARCLA Major Entrance Award.
I have 3+ years professional experience as a computational designer with IBI/Arcadis, where I developed advanced parametric models for equitable, sustainable urban systems.
While at school, I work as a graduate teaching and research assistant. Ongoing projects include an AI-integrated site-analysis teaching tool, and a study of spatial justice in urban parks.
I am currently investigating resource circularity and building-integrated agriculture as part of an applied research project led by Perkins&Will.

This new UBC Farm building integrates research, learning, office and event programming with radical waste re-use and circular, regenerative ecological strategies. Adapted from an existing 80-year old warehouse, the building relies exclusively on passive heating and cooling strategies, including calibrated occupant loads, strategically placed thermal mass, stack effect ventilation, and an attached passive solar greenhouse.
Envisioned as a radically low-carbon building, the project demonstrates the productive social, ecological and environmental value of sequestering and remediating construction and demolition waste. Re-use of existing materials is maximized; where new materials are necessary, biodegradable and recyclable products are prioritized.
Over its lifetime, the building acts as a living lab for the active processing of local construction and demolition waste. Commonly landfilled materials, like scrap lumber, are sorted and processed on-site for re-use as agricultural inputs.
